Fans of the Netflix hit series The Last Kingdom was excited to see a new trailer for season six released today. The teaser gives viewers a glimpse into what’s in store when the series returns, and it also confirms that there will be at least one additional season of the show.
Starring Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, Millie Brady as Aethelflaed, and David Dawson as Alfred the Great, The Last Kingdom is a historical drama set in ninth-century England during a time when Vikings were invading from Denmark.
The first five seasons have been based on Bernard Cornwell’s novels about Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his fight against those invaders. The Last Kingdom is a BBC One historical drama that follows the adventures of Uhtred, the Saxon son of a Northumbrian nobleman who was captured by Danes and taken to their land as a child.

Alongside Alfred, King Athelstan’s nephew and heir apparent, Uhtred embarks on a quest for vengeance against those who betrayed him and seized his lands.

The Last Kingdom has been renewed for a sixth season and seventh season, but it remains to be seen whether or not there will be more seasons beyond that. The fifth season of the show premiered on Netflix in February 2019, with the new episodes running through June 2019. According to Deadline,
“The series is produced by Carnival Films [and] distributed internationally by NBC Universal International Studios” and “it is based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novels about a young man who fights alongside King Alfred of Wessex against the Danes in Anglo-Saxon England during the 9th century.”

The English historical drama series was based on Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories book series, which also serves as inspiration for the popular Uhtred of Bebbanburg book series by Winston Graham (the author behind Poldark).
Both shows follow a common theme: the protagonist is torn between his loyalty and duty to two nations—in this case England and Wessex vs Danelaw—and eventually chooses where his heart lies, even if it means betraying one or both sides.

I can’t wait to get started on season 6 of the last kingdom and see what new characters will be introduced. I am also excited for some more battles and sword-fighting scenes because we haven’t had nearly enough in this series yet.
